Winter dreary weather is here, with late sunrises and early sunsets. Even so, hardy Shelter Bay residents are out walking and running in low light or dark. Wonderful! Except…
I was driving on Shelter Bay Drive yesterday after dark. A man was walking his dog and his vest and the dog’s collar were an explosion of light from the Scotchlite stripes. Great! Then, not two hundred yards further on, someone was running on the edge of the asphalt wearing black sweatpants and a black hoodie, absolutely invisible. If a car had been coming the other way, close to the center line, I would probably have moved to the right and hit the invisible runner. A terrible moment for driver and runner!
Please! If you’re running or walking in low light or the dark on our streets, wear a reflective vest. You can find safety vests at hardware stores and building supply centers.
Avoid tragedy!
