Important mailing update for time-sensitive USPS mailed items: IRS, property taxes, ballots.
As of December 2025, USPS mail receives its postmark on the date it is processed at a postal processing facility rather than on the date it is dropped off in a mailbox. Recent transportation changes now impact when mail is delivered to the processing facility.
When mailing’s postmark is critical, go to any USPS retail counter and request a manual postmark.
Depositing in the mail slot, a mailbox, or handing to your carrier for general processing does not ensure your item will receive a same-day processing date stamp.
